DOCTORAL PROGRAMS
Uttaranchal University is committed for creating excellence through research in various fields of Law, Engineering, Applied Sciences, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Management and Humanities. Full time (regular) and part-time Ph.D. programs are offered as per guidelines of UGC. Minimum duration is 3 years for full time Doctoral program and 3 years and 6 months for part-time. We are promoting multidisciplinary research and studies.
Candidates for pursuing Ph.D. are selected through research entrance test (UURET), which is conducted twice in a year. Generally, test is conducted in the month of January (winter batch) and June (summer batch) every year. UURET consists of a written exam followed by an interview. Entrance exam consists of 50 MCQs of research methodology/research aptitude and 50 questions from discipline /subject. 50% overall marks are required in the entrance exam to appear in interview. NET/GATE qualified candidates are exempted from entrance exam. Passing of Pre-Ph.D. coursework is compulsory in their research. Every candidate has to publish minimum 2 papers in Scopus indexed journals and 2 papers to be presented in seminar/conferences for thesis submission. The external thesis viva is conducted within 3 months after submission.

ELIGIBILITY
An applicant possessing any one of the following qualifications shall be eligible to apply for admission to a Ph.D. program of the University.
A 2-year/4-semester master's degree or equivalent in the concerned or allied subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.
OR
A 1-year/2-semester master's degree or equivalent in the concerned or allied subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree Program.
OR
4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree or equivalent in the concerned or allied subject with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale.
OR
M.Phil. degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.
OR
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled.
OR
Exemption from appearing at Entrance Examination: Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET, CSIR-NET or GATE with fellowship only, are exempted from entrance exam UURET. Such candidates will have to appear in an interview only.
Program duration
ADMISSION PROCEDURE
All the applicants shall have to appear for Uttaranchal University Research Entrance Test (UURET). The validity of the UURET shall be for one year. Candidates may be provisionally enrolled if they are selected through the UURET entrance test followed by an interview by a sub-committee comprising of at least 3 members as constituted by the Vice-Chancellor. The registration in Ph.D. research shall only be confirmed after satisfactory completion of the course work and approval of the research plan/synopsis on the basis of the presentation given by the candidate before the RAC/RDC.
Students who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/GPAT/Similar national level test holder will be exempted from the University's Research Entrance Test (UURET). All students have to appear in the interview before a sub-committee comprising of at least 3 members as constituted by the Vice-Chancellor. Weightage of NET/Similar national level test will be 70% and 30% weightage is to be given to interview only. Priority will be given to NET/Similar national level test qualified candidates.
University shall decide on year-to-year basis the number of Ph.D. scholars to be admitted program/faculty-wise depending on the number of available Research Supervisors and other academic and physical facilities available, the norms regarding the faculty-student ratio, laboratory, library and such other facilities. University will notify the number of seats for admission, subject/discipline-wise distribution of available seats, criteria for admission, procedure for admission, examination centre(s) where entrance test(s) shall be conducted and all other relevant information well in advance to the candidates/other stakeholders/public at large.
University will follow the reservation policy of the Central Government/Uttarakhand State Government for admission in Ph.D. program in place and formulated from time to time.

THE UNIVERSITY ADMITS CANDIDATES THROUGH
A TWO-STAGE PROCESS
An Entrance Test with qualifying marks of 50%. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% of research aptitude (subject-specific). The Entrance Test shall be conducted at the Centre(s) notified in advance (changes of Centres, if any, shall also be notified well in advance).
An interview/viva-voce to be organized by the University where the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted RDC.
THE INTERVIEW/VIVA-VOCE
WILL ASSESS WHETHER
His/her qualification is at par with the qualifications stipulated by MHRD or any nodal/statutory body of the country for Ph.D. program.
The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research.
The research work can be suitably undertaken at the University.
The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
The Research Scholars shall be registered under the category of Full-Time/Part-Time/Sponsored Research Scholars.
NOTE
All the supporting documents are subject to verification by the competent authority before confirming admission in the Ph.D. program. In the absence of any requisite documents, a candidate will be granted provisional admission in the Ph.D. Program, which is subject to cancellation, if not found fit at a later stage. Under this type of case, the fee submitted by the candidate shall stand forfeited.

Foreign Nationals
May also apply for registration as research scholars
The candidates shall be required to apply for admission to the Ph.D. Program of the University on a prescribed proforma along with the prescribed application fee as given in the regulations.
They shall also attach attested copies of required certificates and Synopsis in English along with a copy of Passport.
The application of Foreign Nationals shall be accepted on the basis of their synopsis submitted with the application form. If the synopsis is not found suitable by the RDC, the application shall be liable to be rejected.
Candidate shall be interviewed by the concerned Sub-Committee, comprising of at least 5 members to be chosen from the RDC, constituted by the Vice-Chancellor and their registration shall be confirmed after satisfactory completion of the prescribed course work and approval of research plan/synopsis on the basis of his/her presentation before the respective RDC.
All Foreign Nationals admitted to the Ph.D. Program shall also be required to complete the coursework offered by the University.
